Everyone is talking about SEO, it seems very complex and in reality it doesn’t need to be complex but every business owner needs to know about the importance of SEO and the basics of it.

In this episode Josh and Alex help C-levels understand the basics of SEO so that they can hold their own in a conversation and manage their marketing well.

What is SEO?

The process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results.

Getting started with your SEO

Over 90% of online experiences start with a search highlighting how important it is that you are visible on Google. How do you become visible?

Search engines work as follows:

  1. They crawl
  2. Then they index
  3. Finally, they rank content

So the first step is to get dicovered by being findable. You can achieve that by being relevant through the creation of high-quality content on the topics you want to rank for.

What to do next?

  • keyword analysis // difficulty & vulnerability
  • build Authority on your domain with high-quality backlinks
  • You must balance relevance and authority
  • reap the rewards for “free” for years to come (misconception: not free)

Don’t try to trick Google!

It’s getting harder and harder to trick Google. Your focus should be on:

  • On-Page SEO= content, no duplicate content, crawl, keywords, SSL
  • Off-Page SEO= trust, authority, social media, backlinks

What should you do to leverage your content to capitalise on its on SEO potential?

  • Structure: optimised URL slug, powerful H1 and supporting H2s
  • Images with keyword Alt Text (Google image search)
  • Generate Backlinks from high site authority websites
  • Social media opengraphs for optimised sharing and rich snippets to highlight key information and improve search results
  • Strategy: pillar page & topic clusters with internal linking to pillar
  • mobile responsive website with fast load time
  • Think about YOUR CUSTOMERS, not your ranking – solve their burning problems
  • 80/20 rule

Main idea: you need to focus on making your content awesome and well-structured so search engines can easily crawl it and be more likely to rank it and show it to their customers.

Some SEO tools for better understanding

  • Google Serach Console: site health + performance
  • AHREFS / SEM Rush: benchmarking, keyword research & strategy
  • Google Keyword Planner: find high intent keywords & long-tail keywords
