Combat Burnout Before it Happens

Leadership is often perceived as glamorous. Leading a team, department, or entire organisation is a tremendous privilege, but it is also an equally daunting responsibility.

At every leadership level, challenges arise. Senior leaders often feel isolated, overwhelmed, and mentally drained. One challenge that I feel does not get talked about enough is “Leadership Overwhelm.”

96% of senior leaders report feeling some degree of burnout. Over 30% describe their burnout levels as "extreme."

Harvard Business Review

What is Leadership Overwhelm?

Leadership Overwhelm is the intense feeling of being submerged, stressed, or mentally exhausted due to the responsibilities and pressures intrinsic to leadership roles. This sensation arises from a multitude of factors: the immense weight of decisions, the responsibility for the well-being and success of teams, intricate tasks, and the anticipations set by stakeholders.

When times are good, leaders might bask in the glow of success. In tough times, they might wrestle with feelings of self-doubt, guilt, or even the notorious “imposter syndrome.”

Domino Effect of Leadership Overwhelm

When leaders are overwhelmed, the entire organisation feels the effects. Decisions become muddled, communication dwindles, and the work environment can become toxic. World Health Organisation (WHO) research shows that depression and anxiety (often stemming from workplace stress) cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.

What makes matters worse is that 69% of employees believe discussing stress is taboo. Leaders, in particular, feel this pressure to avoid showing “weakness.” (Deloitte)

New Leadership Approach: Collective Leadership

In the traditional model of leadership one individual bears the responsibility. This is rapidly evolving. Collective leadership decentralises power and distributes responsibilities across the board. Simon Sinek once said, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge” and this really helped change my view of leadership.

By implementing collective leadership, organisations not only reduce burnout but foster a culture of empowerment, trust, mutual respect, and most importantly, resilience.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Features of Collective Leadership

  • Shared Responsibility: Leveraging the diverse expertise of many.
  • Interdependence: Active collaboration among leaders.
  • Open Dialogue: Ensuring all voices are heard.
  • Flexibility: Rotating roles based on expertise and task relevance.

Benefits of Collective Leadership

  • Diverse Perspectives: Different backgrounds, experiences, and thought processes come into play, leading to better and more innovative decisions.
  • Reduced Burnout: With responsibilities shared, the risk of leadership overwhelm and burnout diminishes significantly.
  • Strengthened Organisational Culture: As more individuals step into leadership roles, a culture of empowerment, trust, and mutual respect develops.
  • Enhanced Agility: Organisations with collective leadership are better poised to navigate change since they can rapidly tap into diverse expertise and viewpoints.

Tackling Leadership Overwhelm

Addressing leadership overwhelm requires a balance of personal well-being, management strategies and a supportive environment. Being proactive about these aspects can not only reduce overwhelm but also enhance overall leadership success.

Drawing upon the insights of industry experts and leaders in our community, here are some strategies to manage and overcome leadership overwhelm:

  1. Prioritise Self-Care: Just as in flight safety, secure your oxygen mask first before assisting others.
  2. Embrace Delegation: Trust your team; it’s a sign of strength, not weakness
  3. Value Mentorship: A mentor can act as a lighthouse, guiding you away from potential pitfalls.
  4. Open Communication: Foster an environment where feelings are shared without judgment.
  5. Master Time Management: Prioritise tasks and ensure a balance between work and leisure.
  6. Celebrate Small Wins: Every milestone, no matter how small, deserves recognition.
  7. Seek Feedback: Constantly evolve based on constructive feedback from your team and peers.

Leadership is complex. However, with the right strategies, tools, and mindset, leaders can navigate challenges effectively, ensuring not only their well-being but also the health, productivity, and innovation of their organisations.

Embrace the New Age of Leadership

The world is transforming, and so must our approach to leadership. We are at a pivotal juncture where we have the opportunity to reshape and redefine leadership for the better.

For all leaders out there feeling overwhelmed, know that you are not alone on this journey. The path to alleviating overwhelm lies not in solitude but in collaboration.

Great leaders do not create followers, they create more leaders.
